Every step counts towards being physically active. To reach the recommended 60 minutes
of moderate intensity activity on most days of the week, try getting active in blocks
of at least 10-minutes. Moderate intensity activity means that your heart rate,
body temperature and breathing rate is increased, so you feel as though you have
been working. Cardiovascular, strength and flexibility training should all be included
to promote health. The following are a few strategies for getting and staying active:
- park the car 10 minutes away from your destination or park at the far end of the
parking lot. Better yet, leave the car at home and bike or walk to work and when
doing errands,
- get in the garden and dig, prune, rake and weed,
- dance to your favorite up-beat music,
- schedule activity into your day and make sure you make it to your “appointment”,
- find an activity partner-it is more fun with a friend, and
- keep a log of your activities, to show yourself the improvements you are making.
