Take Two

Many KFL&A residents abandoned New Year's Resolutions by mid-February. Now, almost six months later, is a great time to take two in order to get back on track towards accomplishing those goals.

Long Active Days of Summer

The warmer temperatures and the increased daylight make the summer a great time to make physical activity a part of your daily life at home, at work, at play, and on the way.

If you have to go somewhere, stop for a moment and think. Is it really that far? Could you walk instead of drive? If it's a bit far to walk or you'd rather get there faster, could you ride your bike?

Leaving your car at home to walk or cycle is a great way to make physical activity a part of your daily routine, benefit your health, the environment and your wallet!

Here is where to start:
  1. Pick a destination you visit often that is not too far away. It can be your workplace, your favourite grocery store or a close friend’s home. Try and choose an active option like walking, cycling, or rollerblading for every second trip to this location.
  2. Get the gear you need to make it convenient. Tune up your bike and choose a good pair of walking shoes and comfortable outdoor clothing.
  3. Tell your friends and family about what you are doing and share how much fun and physical activity you’re getting from integrating just two out of every five trips to your destination.
  4. Turn physical activity into family time by biking or walking together to pick up groceries, watering your community garden or traveling to or from school.
For more resources to encourage you to leave the car at home and move yourself check out the following:
  • Follow this link to a map of City of Kingston cycling routes including routes with less traffic, streets with paved shoulders and connector routes that may have heavier traffic
  • Check out the Kingston Frontenac, Lennox and Addington Trails-at-a-Glance website for walking trails that you can take to work, or for pleasure.
  • A number of possibilities exist in using the Kingston Transit or Park & Ride Program. Both of these options offer the opportunity for physical activity, saving money and improving one’s environmental footprint.
