Take Two

Many KFL&A residents abandoned New Year's Resolutions by mid-February. Now, almost six months later, is a great time to take two in order to get back on track towards accomplishing those goals.

Revisit your shopping habits: how to stock up and eat well!

Eating well begins with stocking your fridge, freezer, and cupboards with wholesome foods for the meals and snacks you plan to eat. Plan ahead for what you need at the grocery store, and consider these options for getting fresh-tasting food this summer.

Grocery Store
Shop the outer aisles of the grocery store first. This is where you`ll find fresh and frozen vegetables and fruit, whole grain breads, lean meat, fish and poultry, eggs, and low fat milk products. Then find other healthy basics from the inner aisles–canned or dried legumes, whole grain pasta, cereals and brown rice, and look for lower sodium canned vegetables.

Public Market
Summer is a great time to explore your local public market! Try a variety of seasonal vegetables and fruit when they are at their peak ripeness and taste. Find information about the Kingston Public Market, or look for one in your community. Bring the kids along to experience a different way of shopping for fresh produce and have a fun taste test at home with different vegetables and fruit. If you come across a vegetable or fruit you haven’t tried before, you can ask at the stand how it was grown, and how they recommend cooking or eating it. Foodland Ontario has information on all Ontario-grown vegetables and fruit, including when they are in season and recipes!

Gardens
Why not try your hand at gardening this summer? Even if you don`t have a lot of space, you can grow herbs and some vegetables, like tomatoes, in smaller gardens or containers. Or you can rent or use land at a Community Garden. This is a large garden plot divided up for use by people around your neighbourhood who want some space to garden. It`s a great way to support your community, try something new, and appreciate what goes into growing food. Find out more about a community garden near you here.
